Blog: Social networking sites

Today, I want to talk about my experience and impressions about Facebook and Twitter, as well as Reddit and Tumblr.

Social networking sites are a pretty new commodity all things considered. They've only been around nigh a decade, and have so much room to develop more over the coming years. However, I can still remember how Facebook started as a young, middle schooler back in 06 as the new way all my friends kept in contact. Furthermore, Facebook allowed for a very clean looking instant messaging service that has been revamped time and time again, and most recently including games to play with friends, access to gif keyboards, and other unasked for but handy functionality. In contrast to Twitter, twitter allows more of a group conversation around hashtags and being able to have twitter wars with one another. Updating statuses to throw subliminal messages at someone (subs) is a lot of work and the audience is generally much more personal, disallowing for a less direct approach without ramifications. But on Twitter, there are communities that will encourage that and totally agree with those actions, creating a snowball effect of conversation.

Twitter for me isn't that great. I hardly use it in all honesty; i still don't understand the appeal outside of some memes and occasional giggles, but hey, people use it, I just don't happen to use it.

Reddit is another interesting way to meet strangers and create communities. Reddit takes in post ideas from content creators to random fads that exist within a subsection. People use their accounts to keep a long chain of conversation, often putting meaningful input for the more serious posts and troll like comments for the troll like conversations. I use reddit a lot, and i've made some interesting friends whom i've never met in real life but totally use a resource for a lot of my day to day activities.

Tumblr................... tumblr is odd. The community that exists within it is hard to communicate with as the platform encourages people to look at other people's blocks, but not necessary form a companionship with. Sure there's an AMA button somewhere on the post, and that comments on post could be used as a means with communicating with other people, but digging through comments on popular posts is exhausting when there isn't a proper filtering system in there.

What do you all think?
