CIS 3810 Research Project Proposal

Hey Guys!

Per our homework assignment, I wanted to properly explain my thoughts, ideas, and areas of focus for my research project. I want to explore the privacy concerns of  how commonly used social media platforms, such as Facebook, Reddit, Twitter etc., and how they feed into modern advertising techniques, models, and strategies. What this means is exploring the internet privacy laws that exist currently, how they are implemented onto social media platforms, what data social media platforms collect on the user, and how that data is used in constructing targeted advertisements for the user. Furthermore, I want to pay attention to the privacy laws and data collected on the user that the general user would not know, as a lot of data is collected on users without them knowing!

I myself have worked in advertising prior, so I know from first hand experience of what kinds of data is collected on platforms like YouTube, but I think it would be incredibly interesting to look at more than just YouTube (which is a digital platform, not social!) and into social spaces where advertisements appear and are main generators of money for the platform owner.

Hope you find this research project interesting!

  1. Hey Sabbir, this is a cool project. I actually worked on a similar project when I interned for Kik Messenger (basically looked at all the different privacy policies for different social media platforms to see what location tracking they take in and what data they feed off of which in turn results in ads and data storage, etc). I'm almost positive most (like 9 out of 10) social media sources will collect your data and will use if for ads. Even Uber is starting to do it!

In regards to the information that users don't know about, I"m pretty sure the term is IDFA (https://support.google.com/adxbuyer/answer/3221407?hl=en). It's basically a feature in every phone that automatically says an advertiser can show you ads. If you decide to turn this off (which like 90% of people don't do) then they won't receive ads on their devices.

It's definetly a relevant project - though digital is becoming this huge push in the 21st century, to what extent does it need to be regulated and controlled. Hope it works out well, good luck!
